A modal dialog prevents other forms of user interaction while it is showing. This is suitable for situations where it would be inappropriate for the user to do other interactions, for example where there has been some sort of event (such as a network failure) that requires immediate attention, or some action, such as 'save file' that should be completed before continuing. This is in contrast to a non-modal dialog.
